Indonesian favorite men’s singles badminton player Anthony Sinisuka Ginting took revenge against Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in the second round of the 2019 Singapore Open on Thursday, earning himself a quarterfinal spot.

Indonesian shuttlers have always found the Japanese to be tough opponents.

In the Singapore battle, Anthony managed to tame Nishimoto 21-10, 21-16. At the Malaysia Open last week, the Japanese player outwitted the Indonesian 21-18, 13-21, 21-23 in the first round.

“Thank God, I was able to deliver today [Thursday] and reach the next round. I learned a lot from the previous meeting, in which he [Nishimoto] executed his strategy well enough. Today, it was my turn to do well,” said Anthony as quoted by badmintonindonesia.org.

“In Malaysia, I was less patient, which caused me to make too many unforced errors. Today I took an offensive approach, and I controlled the shuttle well enough. I really learned my lesson,” he added.

With the win, Anthony and Nishimoto now have two wins each in their head-to-heads against each other.

In Friday’s quarterfinal, Anthony is set to face either China’s Chen Long or India’s Parupalli Kashyap.

On paper, Anthony enjoys an advantage in the head-to-head records against both players — 5-3 against Chen and 4-0 against Kashyap.

World number nine Anthony nevertheless refused to take any opponent for granted.

“All I need to do is to stay focused. My plan for tonight is to have a proper recovery and watch my previous matches against those two.

“I don’t want to look down on any of them, because although I have the upper hand in the head-to-heads, it doesn’t guarantee my win [in the quarterfinal],” he added.

Another favorite, world number eight Jonatan Christie, also advanced to the quarterfinal after beating Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia 21-13, 21-12 in Thursday’s second round. Jonatan is set to meet either world number three Viktor Axelsen of Denmark or Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen.

In the men’s doubles, world number one duo Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo as well as world number four pair Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan also secured quarterfinal spots.

Marcus and Kevin are set to play against either compatriots Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto or qualifiers Chooi Kah Ming and Low Juan Shen of Malaysia. Meanwhile, Hendra and Ahsan are to face Malaysia’s Goh V. Shem and Tan Wee Kiong.

In the mixed doubles, world number nine pair Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja are to play world number five duo Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying of Malaysia in the quarterfinals, while non-seeded Indonesians Ricky Karanda Suwardi and Pia Zebadiah Bernadet are to face Malaysia’s Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing.
