Indonesia held the world’s biggest one-day 2019 presidential and legislative elections, marked by tens of millions of citizens casting ballots at some 800,000 polling stations across the country. Voters likened the ambience to that of a holiday celebration.
More than 190 million Indonesians are estimated to have gone to the 800,000 polling stations to choose between two presidential tickets and hundreds of candidates for the House of Representatives, Regional Representative Council (DPD) and regional legislative councils (DPRD).
The election was met with enthusiasm in some parts of the country. Voting, however, was delayed in several regions such as Abepura district in South Jayapura and Banggai regency in Central Sulawesi for various reasons, including a lack of materials and delays in the distribution of ballots.
A quick count conducted by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Cyrus Network indicates that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has been reelected to the presidency, with the Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin ticket winning 55.8 percent of the vote against Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno’s 44.2 percent.
Jokowi has called on members of the public to reunite as brothers and sisters following the bitterly contested presidential election that again pitted him against his old rival, Prabowo.
