Passengers will be allowed to eat and drink inside MRT trains during Ramadan when breaking their fast, an official has said.

PT MRT Jakarta operation and maintenance director Muhammad Effendi said the regulation that prohibits passengers from eating inside MRT trains and stations will not be enforced during the Islamic holy month, which will start next week.

“We will permit passengers to break their fast during Ramadan,” Effendi said during a presser in South Jakarta on Monday.

He was quick to add that passengers would be discouraged from disposing of their waste inside the train.

“Thirty minutes before the breaking of the fast, we’ll make an announcement to notify passengers,” he said, adding that he anticipated a surge in the number of passengers who would want to pray inside the stations. (fac)
