P

lastic waste has jeopardized migratory birds in Lake Limboto, Gorontalo, a lake that has long faced problems posed by degrading environmental conditions.

The latest situation of the lake was the highlight of a photo exhibition held recently in Gorontalo to commemorate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), which falls on May 11 each year, jointly organized by several concerned parties including local non-governmental groups and bird enthusiasts.

The event exhibited photos of waste piling up on the banks of the lake. A photo even depicted a sea pigeon flying with strings wrapped around its body.

The plastic waste in the lake, according to Gorontalo Regency Environment Agency head Saiful Kiraman, came from the surrounding residential areas through the rivers that connect the privately owned areas to the lake.

Saiful blamed the condition on several factors, including bad waste management and an inadequate number of dump trucks, inadequate funds and human resources and the local people’s bad habit of littering.

Other problems, he said, included the lack of a bylaw that limits the use of plastic, such as plastic bags in shopping centers. Saiful, however, said that local people are not yet ready to have such a bylaw.
