he Surabaya District Court has sentenced a soap opera star, identified only as VA, to five months in jail on Wednesday afternoon for "disseminating immoral content".
The sentence was lower than the prosecutor's demand of six months in jail.
Presiding judge Dwi Purwadi said VA was found guilty of violating articles 27 and 44 of Law No. 19/2016 on electronic information and transactions.
"The defendant has been proven guilty for intentionally transmitting electronic information that violated morality as indicated by the prosecutors, [thus] the court sentenced her to five months in prison," Dwi said.
Accompanied by her lawyers, VA said she accepted the court's decision and would now appeal the verdict. Meanwhile, the prosecutors told the media they were still considering if they would appeal the ruling.
The sentence will be reduced by the time that VA has already served. VA has been detained since Jan. 31 and is expected to walk free from jail in five days.
Police caught VA in a Surabaya hotel room in East Java with a businessman who is suspected to have paid the soap star for sex in January. (swd)
