Reading material on your smartphone in a healthy way

N

owadays, people can read a lot of material on their smartphones whether work-related documents, school and university learning materials or simply leisure reading materials, now available in e-book and PDF formats, allowing you to read them anytime, anywhere.

Working, studying and reading are good for people at any age, as these activities stimulate your brain, thereby keeping your mind sharper, longer. Staring at your smartphone for a prolonged period, however, can compromise your optical health due to backlight exposure. How to protect your eyes while conducting these activities on your smartphone?

There are several rules of thumb, including: not reading on your smartphone for more than an hour and taking 15-minute breaks in between where you stare at green objects or natural lights such as the blue sky to recover the rhodopsin pigment in your eye, responsible for adjusting your color perception.

Second, do not read while lying down, as it can cause or exacerbate astigmatism; it is better to sit up straight and keep a 25-30-centimeter distance between your eyes and the object you are reading. Also, the light coming from your smartphone is not enough when you read; make sure you get enough lighting in the room from lamps or daylight.

Several smartphones have also been equipped with eye-protection features, such as OPPO’s A92 variant, which can reduce the blue light that can damage the retina. The smartphone also has an eye care adjustment to manage color temperature from cool to warm.

While taking these precautions, have a great time reading on your smartphone, whether for working, studying or simply for pleasure!
