In 2015, the Gadjah Mada University Alumni Family (Kagama) established a special working unit to develop the Karimunjawa area.

Since then they have been working on a program called Bhakti Kami Kagama Mbangun Karimunjawa (Our Devotion to Build Karimunjawa) that covers tourism, marine ecosystem conservation, public health service and general service.

For tourism, the organization has hosted training sessions for tourism practitioners in Karimunjawa, first-aid training for ocean-related accidents, Homestay Award, waste management at Mosquito Island, held in partnership with maritime and fisheries department of Central Java, as well as supplying wastebaskets on tourist boats.

Other activities include holding 'Cheap Market', entertainment, coral reef plantation, baby turtle release, mangrove plantation, free medical and dental checkup and medical counseling.

“We are very concerned with the waste around here, Jepara regency administrations already made a trash disposal site (TPA) near Alang-Alang village but it’s not perfect yet. I hope there will be changes soon,” told Kagama Jepara head Heri Kusnanto.

 “The closing of this program will be on October 20 – 22. This program also partners up with Diponegoro University Medical School Alumni Association,” he added.

For the closing of the program, members of Kagama is bringing their family members to Karimunjawa.

“The holiday package is for three days and two nights, for Kagama members the price is Rp.1,250,000 ($92)/person, for non-members the price is Rp.1,500,000/person,” Heri said.

The itinerary includes snorkeling, exploring coral reefs conservation, touring the Karimunjawa Island, fish barbeque at Menjangan Island and Tour de Mangrove. (asw)
