The latest survey conducted by Kalibrr Indonesia indicates that 73 percent of all job vacancies are in Jakarta, 6 percent in Banten, 4 percent in East Java, 3 percent in West Java and 2 percent in Central Java
any young talents in rural areas don’t have many options but to try their luck in big cities that not only offer bigger job opportunities but also a better career path.
A study by Kalibrr Indonesia, a job-seeking platform that maps out job opportunities nationwide based on the vacancies posted on its site between October 2018 and September 2019, indicates that 73 percent of all job vacancies are in Jakarta.
Next in line, Banten represents 6 percent of the total jobs available, East Java 4 percent, West Java 3 percent and Central Java 2 percent. Meanwhile, other areas in Indonesia account for 12 percent of all job vacancies, showing that opportunities for employment are still concentrated in the capital.
This is the reason why Rike, not her real name, chose to find work in Jakarta. Originally from Padang, West Sumatra, she has lived in the capital for years and obtained her bachelor's degree here.
“There are so many job opportunities in Jakarta. All companies are based here. The offices are here, either international or national companies; not to mention, [a better] career path,” the 22-year-old told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
She explained that the jobs available in her hometown did not suit the expertise she had honed during her university years. Coming from a creative field, she believed that she was better suited for a job in marketing or public relations and noted that “all advertising work is centered in Jakarta”.
Based on the Kalibrr study, the fourth industrial revolution or Industry 4.0 has impacted the sectors of work that are most in-demand. It reports that 27 percent of job vacancies are related to IT & software, 27 percent to sales and marketing, 7 percent to accounting and finance, 6 percent to media and creative work, 5 percent to administration and coordination and 27 percent to others. The data indicates that more than a quarter of the jobs that are offered in the city are in accordance with Rike’s desired line of work.
