hree of the most senior Golkar Party politicians issued a joint statement on Wednesday backing the leadership of party chairman Airlangga Hartarto and rejected a proposal for the convening of an extraordinary congress to elect a new chairman for the party.
The three politicians, Akbar Tanjung, Agung Laksono and Aburizal Bakrie, all former leaders of the party, issued the statement during a meeting with Airlangga in Jakarta.
Aburizal currently serves as chairman of the party's advisory board, Akbar chairman of the party's ethics council and Agung chairman of the party's council of experts.
"Chairmen of the councils, Pak Ical [Aburizal], Pak Agung and Pak Akbar Tanjung, all support Airlangga to finish his term through to 2024 and reject the proposal for an extraordinary congress," Golkar secretary-general Lodewijk J. Paulus said in a statement.
The three party elders also gave the authority to Airlangga to decide which coalition Golkar would join for the 2024 presidential election.
Discontent has grown within Golkar over its “unclear” direction ahead of the election. Airlangga has been eyeing his chances to run in the presidential race, but recent opinion polls show that his popularity remains persistently low.
