acebook activated its Safety Check feature following suicide bombings at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, on Tuesday. According to reports, the incident killed at least 36 people and wounded many others.
Introduced in 2014, Safety Check sends users a notification to if they happen to be in an area where a major disaster or incident occurs. Users can simply choose “I’m safe” as a status update regarding their current condition and Facebook will generate the information.

The tool also lets users know about other netizens' status and users can mark friends as safe if they happen to be together. Safety status and comments can only be viewed by a user’s friends on the social network.
Safety Check was initially activated for several major natural disasters including the earthquake in Nepal. But after the Paris terrorist attack in November last year, Facebook decided to implement the tool outside major disasters for the first time. The alert feature was also used during the Orlando shooting earlier this month. (kes)
