fter Athirah brought Makassar culture to the screen and Salawaku captured the breathtaking views of Seram Island in Maluku, Surga di Telapak Kaki Ibu (Heaven Lies Beneath Your Mother's Feet) aims to introduce all things Minangkabau.

Minangkabau, a region and ethnic group in West Sumatra, showcases its culture, art and landscape in the movie.

Directed by Sony Gaokasak from West Sumatra, most of the movie was shot in the province rather than in Jakarta. “Ninety percent of the shooting, which was around 18 days, was done in West Sumatra,” he told Antara news agency. “Minangkabau has unique culture and beautiful landscapes, so this can be a way to promote the region.”

Sony, who had wanted to produce a movie showcasing West Sumatra, said he deliberately chose women as a theme because of their crucial role in Minangkabau culture, as described by the term bundo kanduang.

Meanwhile, West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno said he hoped the movie would have a positive impact on tourism. “The film tells the cultural story of Minang people; hopefully it will make West Sumatra known nationally and worldwide,” he said.

Surga di Telapak Kaki Ibu follows Bundo (Unique Priscilla) who lives alone in Tanah Datar and has a daughter Denay (Jessica Milla) who decides to move to Jakarta.

Released on Nov. 24, the movie also stars Kevin Julio and Dewi Hughes. (wir/kes)
