ith the 30th anniversary of the Nike Air Max line right around the corner, NikeLab has partnered with three influencers to revamp the look of the classic sneaker.

Riccardo Tisci, frequent Nike collaborator, said, “the shoes had a huge influence and a huge impact in Italian culture. For me the shoes are classic, but not classic in the boring way. Classic in the way like when you are looking up in Rome, seeing the architecture and the sculptures.”

Tisci redesigned the Air Max 97, adding a navy midcut silhouette with a white outsole, foil accents and embossed logos.

“Fashion is having a big moment with sportswear, which is good,” Tisci said as quoted by Women's Wear Daily, regarding the recent streetwear trend. “But I think honesty is what people really want in design.”

Other collaborators are Marc Newson and Arthur Huang, who are a NikeLab industrial designer and chief executive officer of Miniwiz, respectively.

Newson found inspiration in traditional moccasins for his design, which uses Nike’s FlyKnit and VaporMax technology and is made from a full-grain leather chassis and Velcro strap.

Huang’s revamp looked to create the lightest Air Max 1 ever produced, and as he is head of an upcycling company, the all black shoe will come in packaging made of recycled materials.

The shoes will be released to the public on March 26, with Tisci’s redesign at US$200, Huang’s at $250 and Newson’s at $275. (sul/kes)
