The 2017 film adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel Murder on the Orient Express has found its cast.

Assembled by the movie’s director and lead, Kenneth Branagh, the cast includes Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Michelle Pfeiffer, Willem Dafoe, Daisy Ridley, Judi Dench, Leslie Odom Jr. and Josh Gad.

“Part of what made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up was the prospect of a group of people like this in it,” said Branagh in a statement.

Branagh himself will star as Hercule Poirot, a Belgian detective who is “traveling from Istanbul to London when one of his fellow passengers is murdered.”

He continued, “I’m addicted to the work of great storytellers so when you come back to a tale like Agatha Christie’s, you not only have a tremendous piece of entertainment, but you’ve also got something that touches quite deeply, I think, on loss and grief and revenge – many of these characters have emotional secrets.”

Derek Jacobi, who plays Edward Masterman, praised Branagh and the collaborative atmosphere he created.

“An atmosphere where you are free to be yourself, to indulge yourself, to have fun – but what is important, mainly, is the work. And Ken can turn on a sixpence, and he asks his fellow actors to also turn on a sixpence.”

The film is slated to premiere in November. (sul/kes)
