he latest reboot of The Mummy has finally arrived in theaters. As a part of Universal Studios’ cinematic world that includes horror classics like Frankenstein and The Invisible Man, The Mummy marks a new era of monster movies aptly called the Dark Universe.
Directed by Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Now You See Me), its story begins 2,000 years ago. Egyptian princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) was raised to become the first female pharaoh. As she grew within reach of the throne, a prince was born, jeopardizing her position. Desperate and angry, Ahmanet then made a deal with Satan, leading her to kill her family. For her crime, she was buried alive.
The movie fast forwards to present day to follow American soldier Nick Morton (Tom Cruise). Stationed in the Middle East, Nick steals ancient artifacts as part of his side business. Together with his partner-in-crime Chris Vail (Jake Johnson) and British officer of cultural heritage Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis), Nick discovers Ahmanet’s tomb and accidentally awakes her. The plunges goes into chaos as Ahmanet tries to restore her power.

Fans of horror movies can expect plenty of excitement throughout the film as The Mummy generously showcases monsters on screen. Computer generated images (CGI), though not brilliant, made The Mummy an exciting enough film, but without the chilling scares of a horror movie. Meanwhile, plenty of jokes peppered throughout the script help lighten the mood.
Among all the main characters, Boutella is the star of the movie. From the first scene, which presents her as an exotic princess, she hypnotizes the audiences with her enigmatic smile.
All in all, The Mummy was a satisfactory introduction for horror fans to enter a new world of cinematic monsters. The brief appearance of Dr. Jekyll (Russell Crowe) will make you eagerly anticipate the next Dark Universe movie to hit cinemas. (kes)
