Who had the shortest Oscars speech this year?

he golden statuette wasn’t the only coveted award at the 90th Academy Awards. Host Jimmy Kimmel made things more interesting when he offered an $18,000 jet ski for the shortest speech of the night. Dame Helen Mirren even posed during the unveiling.
“Why waste time thanking your mom when you can take her on the ride of her life on a brand new jet ski?” Jimmy said. He even showed a stop watch to prove it. Later in the show, he added a trip to Lake Havasu in Arizona so the winner can ride their new vehicle.
But if you weren’t keeping track, here are the top seven shortest speeches of the night. Who came out on top?
#7 Allison Janney – Best Actress in a Supporting Role for I, Tonya (1 min, 19 secs)
Allison Janney got her first Oscar after playing LaVona Harding in I, Tonya. She didn’t waste time to thank the cast of the film, the crew, her glam team, her friends, and her mother. It’s surprising that she even fit everyone in under two minutes.
#6 Jordan Peele – Best Original Screenplay for Get Out (1 min, 14 secs)
“You’re going to ruin my jet ski,” Jordan Peele said as he tried to pacify the applause. Although he missed the short speech mark, he was still able to share how it took him 20 times to work on Get Out. And now, he won an Oscar for his first film.
#5 Alexander Desplat – Best Original Score for The Shape of Water (55 secs)
Alexander Desplat emphasized how director Guillermo Del Toro let him use music to convey the emotions in the film. But the cutest part is how his mom, who will also turn 90 years old, will be proud of his achievement.

#4 Sebastian Leilo – Best Foreign Language Film for A Fantastic Woman (51 secs)
Sebastian Leilo not only put the spotlight on his team, but also the inspiration behind A Fantastic Woman, actress Daniela Vega. She is also the Oscars’ first openly transgender presenter.
#3 Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick – Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Darkest Hour (45 secs)
Kazuhiro Tsuji mainly thanked Gary Oldman for being an amazing actor to work with. You have to admit that the makeup and prosthetics look realistic as they transformed him into Winston Churchill.
#2 Richard King and Alex Gibson – Best Sound Editing for Dunkirk (43 secs)
If you loved the action-filled atmosphere of Dunkirk, it’s partially thanks to the sound mixing that these men did. Too bad their speech was 13 seconds longer than the winner of the night.
#1 Mark Bridges – Best Costume Design for Phantom Thread (30 secs)
Mark Bridges was one of the first winners of the night, and it seems nobody was able to beat his 30-second speech. He simply thanked the Phantom Thread cast and crew, the costume design team, and the Academy. Congratulations on the award and the jet ski!
