Discerning foodies share insights with The Jakarta Post on dining experiences worth a small fortune.
t was a fine evening when numerous food courses were anticipated. The setting was intimate, the small crowd of diners could see the chef working behind the kitchen counter. Course by course arrived on the table, the taste and presentation equally fine.
This is a typical evening at Javanegra Gourmet Atelier, tucked away in the tree-lined Jl. Kramat Pela in South Jakarta. A private dining establishment opened in 2014, Javanegra serves Spanish-Mediterranean and Indonesian cuisines with selected wines.
The regulars of Javanegra may spend a small fortune each visit, but they think the conversation surrounding the dinner, the impeccable service and close attention to detail make the whole experience worth repeating.
Bianca Lutfi, co-founder of preloved branded fashion website The Brand Buffet, told The Jakarta Post in a WhatsApp message that private dining at Javanegra was one of the best culinary experiences available in Jakarta. But she also mentioned that noodle joint Mpek Tjoen on Jl. KH Ahmad Dahlan – where the price of chicken noodles starts from Rp 35,000 (US$2.50) a bowl - was her current favorite.
“Good food feeds the soul and makes you happy,” said Bianca, adding that when it came to such a novelty as private dining at Javanegra, it was something she enjoyed once in a while, where she also appreciated the craftsmanship of the chef.
“[The dining experience] is a kind of art, especially if certain concepts are applied,” Bianca went on to say.
One could understand that one-of-a-kind dining experience for the gourmet is comparable to an artwork acquired by a discerning collector, or a well-made dress, shoes, handbags bought by fashion enthusiasts.
