UPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Two more young children have died from malnutrition in Kupang, bringing the total number in the province to 11.
The latest victims were Melandri Matheos from Oesapa subdistrict in Kupang city and Fitriani Naklui from Retrain village in Kupang regency.
Both children died Monday at the WZ Yohannes General Hospital in Kupang.
"Both toddlers died of complications linked to malnutrition," a nurse at the hospital said Wednesday.
The nurse said both were treated but died due to dehydration.
In the past three weeks 11 young children have died from malnutrition in the province, including nine from the Kupang city and regency areas and two from Central and East Sumba regencies.
An official at the East Nusa Tenggara Health Agency Maksi Taopan, said the provincial administration had sent a proposal requesting Rp 57 billion (US$5.13 million) to the central government in an attempt to gain funding for the growing problem. -- JP
