AKARTA: As part of a road safety campaign, Jakarta Traffic Police handed out Thursday hundreds of free helmets to riders caught wearing substandard, on no helmet at all, rather than ticketing the offenders.
The campaign, code-named Zebra, was launched in several busy areas, including in Grogol,West Jakarta, Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta and Jl. Yos Sudarso, North Jakarta.
Chief of the West Jakarta Traffic Police, Comr. Sungkono, said the annual operation was aimed at reducing the number of traffic accidents involving motorcycles.
"We hand them helmets today to promote safe riding. Hopefully, they will be more aware of the importance of using standard helmets in the future," Sungkono said, as quoted by vivanews.com.
An officer stopped a motorbike carrying three people, only one of whom was wearing a helmet.
