EPARA, Central Java: Around 300 tons of cooking oil that spilled into the sea from the stranded barge ship Prince Capricorn I in Bondo waters, Bangsri district, Jepara, last week, is feared to be a threat to the sea biota on the Java Sea.

Coral reef and sea biota expert Munasik of Semarang-based Diponegoro University said on Thursday the spilled oil could disturb the sea biota, especially the coral reef and bentos (flora and fauna that permanently live on the floor of the sea) attached to the coral reef.

Separately, the head of Jepara regency administration's public relations division, Hadi Priyanto, said the administration had no device to suck the spilled oil and had asked the ship owner to minimize the spill that has so far covered an area of within the radius of 100 meters.
