AKARTA: A key witness who repeatedly failed to attend previous hearings in the trial of graft suspect Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji was present at Thursday’s hearing, the last chance for prosecutors to present witnesses.
Sr. Comr. (Ret.) Maman Abdurrahman Pasha was the final witness in Susno’s trial at the South Jakarta District Court.
Susno is accused of embezzling money from the 2008 West Java gubernatorial election security fund when he was the region’s police chief. Maman was the head of the West Java Police’s finance division at the time.
Maman said Susno had ordered him to slash the security budget. “The order [to slash the budget] was written and spoken,” he said.
Maman said Susno ordered him to open a new Bank Mandiri account to deposit the Rp 8 billion taken from the security budget. He was then told to use the money to purchase traveler’s checks and dollars.
Susno, a former chief detective at the National Police, was a whistle blower who first brought Gayus H. Tambunan’s case to public attention. Shortly after he tipped off the press about the case, the National Police accused him of embezzling the security election money. — JP
