T

he Medan administration in North Sumatra has pledged to provide free public Internet access to the city over the next six years.

“This will be a step-by-step process. We are on our way to turning Medan into a digital city,” Medan Mayor Rahudman Harahap said.

Medan recently received the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Pura Award from the Communications and Information Ministry for developing the ICT infrastructure in the city.

The administration also aims to install free wireless Internet access in public places. “So far, we have built internet cafes in 21 districts and 151 subdistricts, as well as providing free Internet service at agency offices,” Zulkifli Sitepu, the head of Medan’s Information and Communication Agency, said.
