Your letters: Curriculum expectations for 2013

A

curriculum is standard reference in the implementation of the education system.

The curriculum is essential in the effort to increase academic quality in schools because its substance contains regulations ranging from planning and implementation for evaluation in teaching and learning in the education system.

The government’s transformation of the curriculum is an effort to improve the educational system.

The Education and Culture Ministry has changed the educational curriculum and the revised edition will be implemented in the 2013/2014 school year, because the government assumes that the current curriculum does not fit with current development goals.

The curriculum is dynamic in nature because it must keep up with new developments, as well as teachers’ and students’ needs. Students today are different from students of the 1990s, both in style and in mind-set.

Therefore, the educational paradigm must be adapted to real conditions today, so it will create an environment that is conducive for teaching and learning.

A good curriculum is one that can be applied by all teachers at each level of education because teachers in Indonesia have different capabilities. This means that the curriculum not only emphasizes quality of education, but also needs to consider teachers’ abilities.

While the greatest impact of curriculum transformation is on our teachers, it also affects students. Thus, teachers are expected to adapt quickly to a new curriculum. If teachers are not able to adapt to the curriculum, students’ achievements will decrease. Preparedness on the part of our teachers in this case is critical.

The government should introduce the 2013 curriculum to teachers as early as possible to ensure that the government and teachers have the same understanding, and to ensure uniformity in the curriculum’s implementation. By starting early with this process of coordination, major failures in the implementation of the curriculum that arise from misconceptions can be mitigated.

Public expectations are that teachers can implement the 2013 curriculum to the best of their ability. Professional teachers will always follow developments.

Information technology and English capabilities have become crucial to the success of teachers in the implementation of the new curriculum. If teachers are competent in both areas, they have no need to worry about a change in the curriculum.
