Your letters: The apex of the food pyramid

veryone who studied science in high school certainly must have learned about the food pyramid. If one remembers, the consumption of things in the top part of the food pyramid, which consists of fat, sugar and salt, should be limited.

People nowadays might not be able to follow this notion in today'€™s fast-paced world and there might be some of you who are interested to know the ways to shift the equation to finding healthier substitutes that can fight the common problems faced by people today, such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Here are some tips to help you take steps to live a healthier life that will give you more energy and allow you to feel good.

To cut own on fats, limit fried food such as chips and choose healthier cooking methods like grilling, toasting, baking, pan-frying or steaming, instead of deep frying. Choose vegetable oils that are high in monounsaturated fats such as rapeseed or olive oil or polyunsaturated fats such as sunflower or corn oil. Avoid oils with saturated fats such as palm oil.

Avoid sugary foods such as soft drinks, candy, cereal, ice cream, milkshakes, etc. Instead, what you can do is make a super green smoothie with green veggies or add in some yogurt and fresh fruit to consume an enhancing beverage consisting of antioxidants, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

Add as little salt as possible to your food. Try to avoid salt completely by using other flavorings such as herbs, spices, pepper or garlic. Also, check out the salt content on the food labels before consuming packaged food.

Always make time for breakfast. People who consume a healthy morning meal are more likely to maintain a healthy weight. Breakfast boosts your metabolism, giving your body and brain the jump-start needed. It prevents you from over-eating in the later meals of the day. It is only you who can and should take care of your health and it all starts with the food you eat. Start today, eat right and enjoy life to the fullest.
