Schools told to expel delinquent students

D

eputy Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama said that state-run schoolsshould take harsh measures against students involved in crime.

'€œThe school management can punish them by suspending them at the end of the academic year or even expelling them,'€ he said at City Hall on Thursday.

Ahok also said that he supported SMA N 46 state senior high school in South Jakarta, which expelled 35 students recently.

On Oct. 17, the students hijacked a bus carrying students from a rival senior high school. SMA N 46 investigated each of the students and expelled them on Oct. 24.

'€œStudents should not be involved with such things. If the school did not punish them, it could encourage other students to do something similar,'€ Ahok said.

Ahok also suggested that all parents monitor their children, not only at home but also outside. Parents should play an important role in shaping children'€™s characters, he added.
