P

olice personnel have started to secure Christmas religious services to be held in churches nationwide on Tuesday evening, a police official says.

'€œThis evening, police personnel assigned to safeguard churches will be ready in their positions. After a call for readiness at 3 p.m., the security forces have started to move to their positions,'€ Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Apart from safeguarding churches, he said, the police would patrol areas across the city to anticipate possible acts of violence.

'€œIt'€™s not impossible there will be threats against particular churches. Any threats or incidents in churches, big or small, will cause panic,'€ he said.

On Christmas Eve, city police chief Insp. Gen. Putut Eko Bayuseno, Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, and Jakarta consultative forum (Muspida) members will visit several churches, including the Jakarta Cathedral and the Immanuel Protestant Church.

'€œThe visit is aimed at checking the readiness of officers in securing the Christmas celebrations,'€ said Rikwanto.

He said Christmas security in Jakarta would involve more than 12,000 personnel from the Jakarta Police and the National Police. (ebf)
