10 killed in head-on crash in Probolinggo

t least 10 people have reportedly been killed and a number of others injured in a head-on collision between a public minivan and a truck in Tongas, Probolinggo, East Java, on Saturday afternoon.
All of those killed were passengers in the minivan. 'We are still trying to identify the victims. Dozens of injured passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital,' Probolinggo Traffic Police head Adj. Comr. Muklason said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Muklason said the public minivan was apparently traveling at high speed in a westward direction. At the time of the accident, the driver of the minivan was overtaking a bus and was, therefore, on the counterflow lane, tribunnews.com reported.
As the driver was overtaking the bus, a truck hit the minivan head-on.
The front sections of both vehicles were severely damaged. Most of the minivan passengers were thrown out of the vehicle upon impact; such was the ferocity of the crash. 'The minivan's driver had nowhere to go when the truck suddenly appeared in the incoming lane,' Muklason added.
