Western Fleet Marine Security Task Force Commander First Adm. Harjo Susmoro told a press conference held in Batam that the Navy had been tipped off by intelligence that the shipment was being made without proper documents issued by the Trade Ministry.
'We also found out that the ship was actually not seaworthy,' he said on Saturday.
He said the interception was made on Thursday, one minute before the ship reached international waters. He added that 10 crew members were arrested.
Harjo, however, declined to reveal the name of the exporter because the investigation was still ongoing.
According to the Navy, the ship was carrying 176 20-foot containers, comprising 134 containers of tin valued at US$ 22,000 per ton, nine of peppercorn, 13 of rubber and 20 empty containers.(tjs/dic)
