ational Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Lt. Gen (ret) Marciano Norman said the neutrality of Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Police officers in the run-up to the July 9 presidential election must not be compromised, as he urged all citizens to be involved in monitoring violations of the pledge.
'TNI and police officers will obey the rules if all citizens are ready to join in monitoring efforts. Otherwise, I am worried that citizens will be doubtful about the neutrality of TNI and police officers,' he said at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Marciano said he was convinced that the social climate during the campaign period from June 4 to July 5 would remain favorable.
According to media reports, a resident from a predominantly Chinese neighborhood near Gambir, Central Jakarta, was visited early last Tuesday by a man claiming to be a village supervisory non-commissioned officer (Babinsa), who said he had been assigned to verify the data of eligible voters in the neighborhood.
The officer was later seen to be registering locals' intention to vote for the Gerindra Party's presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, a former commander of the Army's Special Forces (Kopassus).
However, TNI commander Gen. Moeldoko and Army chief of staff Gen. Budiman gave contradictory statements on the matter. Moeldoko maintained that the Gambir incident was an isolated case because there had been no instruction from TNI headquarters to conduct vote canvassing, while Budiman said Babinsa officers were involved.
On Sunday, Army spokesperson Brig. Gen. Andhika Perkasa said that his institution had taken disciplinary action against the two Babinsa officers allegedly involved in political canvassing for Prabowo.
Prabowo-Hatta, the ticket nominated by the Gerindra-led coalition comprising the Golkar Party, the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), received number "1" for ballot papers in the upcoming presidential election during a recent election number draw at the General Elections Commission (KPU).
The coalition secured 292, or 45.3 percent, of the total 560 seats at the House of Representatives. (gda)
