The California T ' the 'T' stands for turbo ' is a grand tourer (GT) suitable for daily use. Without stripping out its sports-car DNA, the California T comes with the elegance, sportiness, versatility and exclusiveness that have distinguished California models since the 1950s.
A grand tourer is a performance or luxury automobile capable of high speeds or long-distance driving. Most common is a two-door coupe, with a two-seat or a two-plus-two seating arrangement.
The term derives from the Italian phrase gran turismo ' or grand tour - used to describe automobiles that make long-distance, high-speed journeys in comfort and style.
'The California T is the door to enter the Ferrari family,' Ferrari Far East managing director Giuseppe Cattaneo told The Jakarta Post on the sidelines of a recent launch ceremony in Jakarta.
Cattaneo said that Ferrari had a wide range of cars to meet any need. 'You buy more Ferrari cars to come into what you want to do that day, or you choose a certain type of Ferrari car that is suitable according to your need.'
The California T is easy to drive ' without losing its aggressive characteristic as a supercar, he says. 'It is still a Ferrari, if you want to be wild ' but it's a car that you can drive as a GT, so it's very relaxed.
'We'd like to say that it introduces the client to the brand, because this model is more approachable,' he adds.
Like all Ferraris, the California T boasts cutting-edge technology, notably a new turbocharged V8 engine.
Engineers of Ferrari, which is headquartered in Maranello, Italy, have designed a power unit that combines classic Ferrari qualities, such as responsiveness, performance and powerful acceleration at all speeds, with reduced emissions and fuel consumption, a high-specific power output and compact dimensions.
The California T is powered by a direct-injection 3855cc V8 turbo engine that punches out 560 cv at 7,500 rpm, yielding a specific power output of 145 cv/l ' the highest in its category ' as well as maximum torque of 755 Nm in seventh gear.
The California T sprints from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 3.6 seconds and delivers extraordinary acceleration.
Emissions have been cut to 250g/km on the combined cycle and by 20 percent in the CO2/horsepower ratio (0.44 g/km/cv), extending the car's range by 15 percent.
The car also sports the latest F1-Trac for acceleration out of corners, and CCM3 carbon-ceramic brakes ' with new composite discs and pads ' integrated with the ESP 8.0 premium system, which controls the ABS to deliver short stopping distances (100 to 0 km/h in just 34 meters).
The Ferrari Styling Center, in collaboration with Pininfarina, has reworked the California T's design.
Its flanks pay homage to the 250 Testa Rossa's pontoon-fender styling, with the front-wing line stretching back towards the compact, muscular rear and bringing sleekness to the sides.
The rear benefits from aerodynamic research resulting in a new triple-fence diffuser.
Arie Christopher of Citra Langgeng Lestari, the official Ferrari distributor for Indonesia, said that the country was looking at selling 10 California Ts this year.
'So far, we've received eight orders, of which the first is set to be delivered to Indonesia in October,' said Arie, revealing that the price range for each California T for the Indonesian market was 10 to 20 percent more expensive than the previously released Ferrari California's Rp 5 billion (US$422,883) to Rp 6 billion price tag.
He further said that there were about 60 Ferrari Californias in Indonesia.
'Ferrari isn't looking for growth. We produced 7,000 cars worldwide last year ['¦.] We will maintain the level of production in the coming year. It is the philosophy of Ferrari to produce fewer cars than demand in order to protect the exclusivity of our brand.
'Ideally, we'd like to sell one-third of our cars in the US, one-third in the Middle East and Europe, and one-third in Asia Pacific. Asia Pacific is a relatively recent market ['¦.] Now, we're in a situation where in a certain part of the world, we're reducing the sales, and in a certain part of the world ' Asia Pacific ' we're increasing the sales.
'As for Indonesia, I think that the market continues to offer prospects for us,' he added.
