Satpol PP told to stand firm against Monas street vendors

H

ead of the Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) Kukuh Hadi Santoso has ordered personnel to take firm and immediate action against illegal street vendors at the National Monument (Monas) park in Central Jakarta.

Kukuh said on Saturday that street vendors were behaving unlawfully and were also often guilty of property damage in their efforts to sell at Monas, according to kompas.com.

"The situation is out of control at Monas. They [illegal vendors] don't just break the fence; they take [the fence] with them, which is out of line. Whomever can help stop them should be rewarded," he said.

Preserving the Monas park was Satpol PP's responsibility, he said. He added that the agency should not hesitate to detain anyone -- including Satpol PP officers -- who were found damaging park facilities.

According to previous reports, Jakarta Satpol PP deployed 1,000 personnel equipped with stun guns to enforce the law and keep vendors out the park.

Previously, Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama told reporters that the city administration would no longer tolerate the presence of street vendors in the park.

According to Bylaw No. 8/2007 on public order, street vendors are prohibited from selling in parks, on roads and on sidewalks. For vendors who had formerly set up operations in the park, the city administration has provided commercial vending space near the Monas'€™ IRTI parking lot

Despite these efforts, however, thousands of vendors continue to sell in the park.

The deputy governor said regulating the street vendors turned ugly when several vendors threatened welders who had been tasked with repairing the park'€™s broken fences.

Ahok said he suspected that '€œbigger players'€ were behind the persistent illegal vending at Monas park. '€œSome big players bring the vendors from outside the city into Monas,'€ he said. (fss/dic)
