Dubai for all budgets

Showtime:  The fountain at the Dubai Mall at sunset.

While the average room rate in Dubai was US$282 in 2013, don'€™t despair '€” the figure is pumped up by the city'€™s 80 five-to-seven-star hotels, according to Mohammed Essa Al Sheikh, the Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing Department'€™s Asia/Australia chief. '€œThere is a Dubai for every budget,'€ he adds.

Travelers are most likely to visit Dubai while transiting through its airport, which is within eight hours'€™ travel of two-thirds'€™ of the world'€™s population, according to Barry Brown, Emirates divisional senior vice president commercial operations for the Far East and Australasia.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, the airline has made short stays in Dubai simple for guests, offering ticketed passengers help in getting transit visas, required for Indonesians, and discount rates at hotels such as magnificent Ottoman-style Jumeirah Zabeel Saray on Palm Island and more humble accommodations.

The Emirates offers twice-daily service from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Check out Emirates'€™ in-flight podcasts on Dubai'€™s film and literary festivals '€” and, if it is available, watch the Strip the City documentary episode '€œDesert City: Dubai'€ to learn how the city'€™s towering buildings were built on shifting sands.
