outh Sulawesi Police arrested two Chinese citizens asthey alighted from a plane at the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport onThursday evening.
They have been identified as Zhong Jibi and Xu Liangeng, both 48.
They were arrested at the request of the Central Sulawesi Police as they have been named suspects in a case of fraud perpetrated against Willy Chandra Wijaya, 47, a resident of Palu, Central Sulawesi.
Police also seized evidence in the form of cash amounting to Rp 650 million (US$56,500) and their passports.
'They initially gave pure gold as a sample to Willy, but after the victim bought more gold worth Rp 650 million, it turned out to be bogus,' South Sulawesi Police chief spokesman Sr. Comr. Endi Sutendi said on Friday.
He added that both suspects were about to take a connecting flight to Jakarta. Officers from the Central Sulawesi Police headquarters apprehended the suspects and the evidence on Friday evening.
