hristophorus Bakdi Sumanto, 73, an influentialfigure in Indonesian literature and professor at Gadjah Mada University'sschool of literature, died on Saturday morning in Yogyakarta. Artist Butet Kartarejasa was amongdozens of people who expressed condolences via social media at Bakdi's passing.
Besides teaching at Gadjah Mada, Bakdi was also popular among students from other universities as he also taught in Sanata Dharma University and the Sebelas Maret State University in Surakarta.
Among Bakdi's popular works are collections of short stories entitled 'Bibir' and 'Dr. Plimin'. During his lifetime, Bakdi was appointed chairman of the Yogyakarta Arts Council.
Bakdi is survived by his wife, Nin Bakdi Sumanto, who is also a renowned writer and their three children. His remains will be rested at the Saint Robert Bellarminus chapel at the Sanata Dharma University compound on Monday before being taken for burial to Gadjah Mada University's cemetery in Sawitsari, Sleman.
