yphoon Vongfong churned toward Okinawa on Saturday, injuring at least a dozen people as the powerful storm pounded the island chain with ferocious winds and driving rain.
The season's 19th typhoon was about 200 km southeast of the capital Naha at noon Saturday, the Meteorological Agency said.
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center has downgraded Vongfong from a super-typhoon, but said it remained 'large and very strong' and warned of gusts, high waves, torrential rain and landslides. Packing gusts of up to 234 kph, Vongfong was moving north slowly at just 10 kph.
Vongfong is expected be in the vicinity of Kyushu early Monday after brushing off Okinawa.
The storm has already cut power to over 17,000 households in Okinawa, and at least 12 people had been injured by noon Saturday, including a man who lost a finger to a door slammed shut by strong winds, a municipal official said.
NHK said many more were injured, including a 9-year-old girl who also had a finger caught in a door.
