egotiations between two conflicting factions of the Golkar Party are on the brink of collapse as the faction led by Aburizal Bakrie is demanding that the matter be settled in court.
'It is better to settle the conflict [over leadership] through [the Jakarta State Administrative Court] so there will be legal certainty in the future,' said the treasurer of Aburizal's Golkar, Bambang Soesatyo, on Tuesday. Bambang said the court was the right forum to determine which faction had the right to lead the party.
'[Court settlement] is the best way considering that the central board appointed at the Ancol [Jakarta] Congress currently led by Agung Laksono is proposing something that is out of the question for us [Aburizal's faction],' he said.
Bambang was referring to a proposal by the Agung-led faction that the party pull out from the Red-and-White Coalition, a government opposition bloc led by Aburizal's Golkar.
Agung said that leaving the coalition did not mean that the party would join the Great Indonesia Coalition, the government's group of supporting political parties.
Bambang said a court settlement may take longer but would not affect the party's organization and its stance on concurrent regional head elections this year.
'It doesn't matter because regional party branches still need to follow [Aburizal's faction] [as suggested by the government],' he said. (***)
