Two patients of Siloam Hospital in Karawaci, Tangerang, died after being given a Buvanest Spinal anesthetic
Two patients of Siloam Hospital in Karawaci, Tangerang, died after being given a Buvanest Spinal anesthetic.
The anesthetic, produced by PT Kalbe Farma, was believed to contain tranexamic acid instead of bupivacaine anesthetic. Tranexamic acid is used to stem bleeding.
"This was an accident. Its label or packaging could have possibly been switched. It is saddening," Siloam Hospital spokesperson Heppi Nurfianto said as quoted by kompas.com.
Heppi explained that the two deceased were undergoing caesarean and urology operations. The two patients both died within a small time period on Feb. 12. No other patients experienced problems.
"The patients complained of itchiness and had convulsions before passing away. The baby of the ob-gyn patient is safe," Heppi said.
Heppi said the hospital would further explain the matter together with representatives of the Health Ministry, Kalbe Farma and the Drug and Food Monitoring Agency (BPOM).
Meanwhile, Kalbe Farma has withdrawn all of its Bevaest products from the market. Investigation is being carried out together with BPOM. (hhr)(++++)
