Surabaya strives to shorten licensing process

T

he Surabaya city government in East Java is committed to shortening the licensing process in housing construction to six months from two years.

The determination is in response to complaints from businesspeople, who face difficulties in getting licenses, including for obtaining a building permit (IMB).

To get an IMB, businesspeople are required to secure an environmental impact analysis (Amdal) permit first, acting chief of the Surabaya city human settlement and spatial planning office Eri Cahyadi said here on Thursday.

"While Amdal touches local residents, investors have to work hard to reach compromises," Eri said following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Surabaya city government and the Indonesian Real Estate's (REI) East Java chapter, as quoted by Antara news agency.

In the future, the licensing process could be carried out at five offices, he said, adding that the Surabaya city administration would soon issue a regulation to shorten the licensing process.

"In the past, people could not start construction jobs if they had not secured an IMB. But now it is enough to hold a written statement of city planning to get an application processed," he explained. (hhr)(++++)
