Deputy Foreign Minister AM Fachir has said that Indonesia will continue to push for stability in the South China Sea.
'Through various approaches and forums we will continue to put forward our common interest. The common interest is [to achieve] stability,' he said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Monday.
The deputy minister was speaking after he opened a seminar entitled 'Maritime fulcrum and foreign policy' at the Foreign Ministry.
Fachir said Indonesia would continuously strive to prevent conflicts surrounding the South China Sea. The government would also strive to create stability in South China Sea areas that had continued to remain tense.
During the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in April, the government pushed for the completion of a Code of Conduct (CoC) agreement it said should become a basis to resolve South China Sea disputes.
'Indonesia has continued to push peace efforts in the South China Sea, one of which is to push for the immediate completion of the CoC agreement between China and ASEAN,' said the ministry's ASEAN Cooperation director I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja.
He said the CoC needed to be immediately completed and agreed to maintain stability in the region.
He further said that the Indonesian government had pushed all parties involved in the territorial disputes to impose self-restraint.
During the summit, President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo highlighted the importance of commitments to maintain and increase stability in the region. (ebf)(+++)
