T

he National Police are facing difficulties in resolving internal conflicts and reforming the police organization as some officials are involved in cases of power abuse, says a top police official.

The head of the police'€™s Detective Corps, Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso, admitted that several officials had allegedly abused their power, with the most recent instance being an extortion case implicating a senior police investigator identified as PN.

The senior police investigator at the drug crime subdirectorate allegedly extorted a drug dealer.

'€œRegarding the extortion case, the suspect has been questioned by the Internal Affairs Division [Propam]. The official results of the questioning will be delivered to me today,'€ Budi told the press at the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta on Monday.

PN was reported to the police regarding his alleged attempt to extort Rp 5 billion (US$384,615) from a drug dealer following a recent police raid on a nightclub in Bandung, West Java.

Budi said the suspect received Rp 3 billion as a first payment from the drug dealer. The suspect has not been detained but he may be suspended if he is found guilty.

In 2013, a senior official of the Lampung Police, Sr. Comr. Suyono, was found guilty of drug possession. He was then rehabilitated and suspended from his position.
