T

he Indonesian badminton team overcame its first hurdle at the Group C qualifying round of the world badminton team tournament, the Sudirman Cup, on Monday after winning by a nose 3-2 against England at Dongfeng Nissan Sport Center in Dongguan, China.

The first point was secured by leading men'€™s doubles pair Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan who crushed Endrew Ellis and Peter Mills 21-17, 21-15.

The two pairs previously met at the All England tournament in March where the Indonesians also won.

The winning streak continued in the next match between women'€™s singles Linda Wenifanetri and Fontaine Mica Chapman.

Linda won easily against lesser-known Chapman 21-10, 21-13 bringing Indonesia to lead 2-0.

'€œThe first win [by the men'€™s doubles] motivated me. I'€™m glad to contribute a point for our team,'€ said Linda.

Unfortunately young shuttler Jonatan Christie failed to follow suit. He was defeated by Rajiv Ouseph 17-21, 16-21.

Jonatan said that he had not found his playing rhythm, but he said that he would learn from the defeat.

Greysia Polii and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari who played next were in luck when their opponent Heather Oliver and Lauren Smith decided to retire after the first set due to an injury to Smith. The Indonesian pair won the set 21-15.

The decision was to award Indonesia the fourth match for a 3-1 lead, ensured victory to the Indonesians.

Even after mixed doubles favorite Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir were defeated 17-21, 18-21 by England'€™s vanguard pair Chris Adcock and Gabrielle Adcock, it did not make much different as Indonesia still led 3-2.

Indonesia will face Denmark in contention for the top group position on Wednesday.

Denmark overthrew England 4-1 on Sunday.(iwa)
