ndonesian independent band Sarasvati shared the stage with French rock band Grand Kino to rework a 600-year-old Sundanese poem called "Bujangga Manik" and present it in a musical format at Galeri Indonesia Kaya in the Grand Indoneia shopping mall, Central Jakarta, on Saturday.
"We had been talking about the collaborative project for a while and thankfully it was realized this year. Gran Kino has also done a great deal of research on Indonesian culture," said Sarasvati vocalist Risa Saraswati on the stage on Saturday.
Bujangga Manik, a narrative poem written on 29 palm leaves, tells of the journey of a Sundanese Hindu poet-sage Prabu Jaya Pakuan on his visit to Java and Bali, among other places.
The collaborative show, which is part of the annual Printemps Français festival, is slated to be held in five cities, namely Bandung, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar.
Both bands played their own songs during the show, as well as their collaborative songs, which will be included in a joint album slated to be released at the end of May.
One of the songs is titled "Sundanese", which tells the story of how Prabu Jaya Pakuan's mother felt as she watched her son departing on his journey, said Risa.
The auditorium was packed with concertgoers who were eager to watch the show.
The Indonesian band first shared the stage with Gran Kino in Printemps Français in 2013. (fsu)(+++)
