n Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) member, Susanto, has said the state must not be defeated in uncovering the facts behind the murder of Engeline, 8, in Denpasar, Bali.
'The state must not lose the fight against child abusers,' he said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Sunday.
Susanto said violence against children should not be taken lightly as it related to the future of the nation. The 'mental revolution' campaign initiated by the President should not prove to be a mere slogan but must be translated into reality so that no other child shares the same fate as Engeline, he further said.
Susanto said among preventive measures was ensuring that parents and care givers did not think that children were possessions that they could treat however they liked.
State agencies must play greater roles in making children-friendly policies, he went on.
'Considering that child protection is a required authority of regional administrations, such as governors, mayors and regents, they have to carry out intensive promotions on child protection,' Susanto said.
'They also have to make use of community-level institutions such as neighborhood units (RT) and community units (RW) as pioneers of promoting child protection as well as to examine how to develop proper methods of prevention, reporting and handling alleged cases of violence involving children,' the commissioner said.
Public figures, such as religious leaders and traditional leaders must also play a central role in creating public awareness on the importance of child protection, he added. (ebf)(++++)
