Kids need good examples to fast

A

psychologist from the University of Indonesia, Vera Itabiliana Hadiwidjojo, gave some tips for parents whose children want to try to fast during Ramadhan.

"First, the kids need an example. Parents need to show them how to fast properly, but don't forget to make it as fun as possible," Vera told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

She went on to say that there were very specific activities that could be introduced to the children during the fasting month, such as when the family wakes up and eats before the sun rises before fasting and also when the family gathers to eat when the sun goes down.

"Those moments should be enjoyable for the kids," she said.

She also added that the kids should not be forced to fast and they should do it gradually.

"Try to have them do it gradually: maybe just for several hours at first," she said.

During the fasting month, which would commence on Thursday, Muslims all around the world practice fasting from when the sun rises until the sun sets as obliged by the Islamic belief system.

Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world, widely observes the practice of various kinds of religious rituals during the fasting month, including fasting and night prayer. (fsu)(+++)
