Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) operational manager Tulus Abadi has urged Uber customers to consider their own safety before using the ride-booking app service because of the legal problems it is currently facing.
'Customers shouldn't just think about their pleasure but also their safety. If something happens to them, who will take responsibility?' he told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
Tulus went on to say that he doubted Uber's safety management as the company was operating without permits from the Jakarta administration and the Transportation Agency.
On Friday, the Jakarta Police seized five Uber cars and questioned the drivers, following a complaint by the Jakarta Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda).
Launched in Indonesia in August last year, Uber has been accused of violating a number of regulations, including the 2009 Traffic and Land Transportation Law and the 1991 gubernatorial regulation on taxi operations.
According to Transportation Agency head Benjamin Bukit, among Uber's business violations is that its cars use black license plates, which are only for private cars.
According to the regulations, a taxi service should be operated by a legal company, must have an operational license, a taxi meter and a logo on each vehicle's body.
'The Transportation Agency also needs to be consistent in taking action against unregulated modes of transportation, such as 'omprengan' [local term for private cars commercially used to transport passengers]. So don't just chase after Uber,' Tulus said.
On Friday, Uber spokesman for South Asia and India Karun Arya released a statement saying that every vehicle under the Uber platform in Jakarta was registered as a hire car with full commercial insurance. Karun said Uber had met all local licensing and registration requirements. (fsu/ebf)(++++)
