Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said the City government would continue seizing cars and drivers working through the app known as Uber if the company failed to register its business
akarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said the City government would continue seizing cars and drivers working through the app known as Uber if the company failed to register its business.
"If Uber registers their business and pays taxes, it can operate here. But if it doesn't, we'll keep on seizing cars," he said on the sidelines of an event held by Bank Indonesia (BI) in Jakarta on Monday.
The governor said he did not mind other application based transportation companies such as Go-Jek and GrabTaxi operating in Indonesia as long as the companies registered their businesses and paid taxes.
The Jakarta Police confiscated five Uber cars and detained the drivers for questioning last Friday, following reports filed by the Jakarta Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda).
Uber, which launched in Indonesia in August last year, provides a service through a smartphone application that allows consumers to hire its cars and drivers for either private or group use.
Organda said Uber violated several regulations, including the 2009 Traffic and Land Transportation Law as it had no legal permit as a transportation operator. The company was also accused of violating the 1991 gubernatorial regulation on taxi operations as it used cars with black license plates.
Uber has insisted on its official statement that it is not a taxi company. (fsu/ebf)(++++)
