ive Muslim residents of Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan were ordered to pay Rp 100,000 (US$7.51) in fines to the state after they were caught eating in a public place during the Ramadhan fasting month.
Teguh Santoso who presided over the panel of judges at the Banjarmasin District Court said in a hearing here on Wednesday that the five were proven guilty of violating Bylaw No 4/2005 on banned activities during the fasting month.
The five who worked as salesmen were caught eating in a food stall in the city during daylight hours on Monday.
Kompas.com reported that the food-stall owner was also ordered to pay Rp 250,000 in fines for opening his business during the fasting month.
Anjar Sawaji, one of the five defendants, said they had to take the meal because they could not resist the hunger after working for many hours that day. (rms)(+++)
