The majority of workers with a monthly salary above Rp 5 million (US$376) in Jakarta are reluctant to use public transportation, a survey shows.

A recent survey carried out by Paramadina University'€™s discussion group showed that Jakarta'€™s middle upper class preferred to use their private vehicles to go to offices.

Released on Tuesday, the survey asks 250 white collar workers in Jakarta'€™s business districts (Sudirman, Thamrin and Rasuna Said, Kuningan) with a monthly salary more than Rp 5 million in various sectors, including banking and finance.

The result shows that 80.4 percent of these workers are using their private vehicles with only 13.6 percent using public transportation. The remaining six percent abstain.

Another highlight from the survey indicates that half of the respondents prefer to use taxis rather than public transportation.

'€œTaxis have been considered a more comfortable form of transportation in comparison with other transportation modes, like Transjakarta or buses,'€ the group'€™s representative Hendri Satrio said as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.

The survey shows that 56.4 percent of the respondents prefer using taxis, 14 percent use Transjakarta, 13.6 percent use trains, 6 percent use buses, 4.8 percent ride motorcycle taxis, while the remaining respondents use three wheeled taxis known as bajaj (0.8 percent) and bicycles (0.8 percent) and 3.6 percent of the respondents abstaining.
