ice President Jusuf Kalla says that haj pilgrims bound for Saudi Arabia should be vaccinated against the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-COV).
'Before departing, they should get vaccinations,' Kalla said on Friday.
He also warned pilgrims against making contact with camels. 'Once they are in Saudi Arabia, they should not get too close to camels,' he said.
So far, no MERS cases have been recorded in Indonesia, but the government must take precautions against the disease ahead of the haj season, Kalla said.
Earlier, Health Minister Nila F. Moeloek urged would-be pilgrims to have medical check-ups before taking the trip.
President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo recently held a limited Cabinet meeting to discuss efforts to prevent MERS from reaching Indonesia.
