AKARTA: Despite protests from residents, Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has stated that this year's Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) program is more effective and more on-target compared to previous years.
This year's KJP program has seen significant changes from last year because the cards now function as debit cards. Junior high and senior high school KJP recipients may only withdraw cash to a maximum of Rp 50,000 (US$3.68) every week, and elementary school students to a maximum Rp 50,000 every two weeks. Thus, only school necessities could be purchased, and only through cashless transaction.
'Although many are protesting, our new system has proven to be much more effective because parents can no longer misuse the KJP funds,' Ahok said at City Hall on Friday.
In the previous system, recipients could directly withdraw all the funds that they received. The city administration, however, received reports that the money was being misused by the recipients' parents.
City-owned lender Bank DKI corporate secretary Zulfarshah said that the city had recorded Rp 8 billion in cashless transactions in book stores by KJP recipients since Monday.
