Sociologist Haedar Nashir has been elected as the new Muhammadiyah chairman for 2015-2020, replacing Din Syamsuddin.

The election took place during a closed meeting of the 13 new members of the Muhammadiyah central executive board (DPP) at the venue of the organization'€™s 47thmuktamar (national congress) at Makassar Muhammadiyah University (Unismuh) on Thursday evening.

In the meeting, Abdul Mu'€™thi was elected as Muhammadiyah's new secretary general.

Kompas.com reported that the selection process for both positions ran very smoothly, taking less than 10 minutes.

'€œThe consulting group has proposed Haedar Nashir as the new Muhammadiyah chairman. Can we agree on this?'€ said Dahlan Rais, who led the congress'€™ eighth plenary meeting.

'€œYes, we all agree,'€ responded the meeting participants.

The handover of the Muhammadiyah executive leadership is scheduled to be held at the congress'€™ twelfth plenary meeting, which will start at 10 a.m. local time on Friday. (edn/ebf)
